It's Damned Vietnam All Over Again

 

For those of us who lived through/in/in-spite-of the Viet Nam war, we are feeling that sickening feeling you get when you know you are about to “blow chunks” and perhaps pass out due to illness.  Here we go again, sticking our stuck-up noses into some other country’s business, and no good can come of it.  Do we really need another huge memorial in D.C. for the fallen?

  

What evil flew up old Barack’s butt when he moved into the White House?  Is it some disease that makes guys want to war in a far away place to promote democracy and feed the military industrial complex that Ike warned us about?  Obama got my vote because he presented a new way, a cleaner, more humane approach to governing, but today after reading the piece on CNN my skin got clammy and my morning coffee kept coming back up.

   

Someone wake Barack up and give him the antidote to whatever makes decent people become idiotic fools who just can’t say NO TO WAR.  It was bad enough having to see George W. Bush with him at the Kennedy funeral, but to be acting like old W is total folly. 

     

Luckily, I still have some HOPE.

(CNN) -- Success in the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan is achievable, even though the situation is serious, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said in a statement Monday.

The statement came as Gen. Stanley McChrystal submitted a long-awaited report on the state of the war.

"The situation ... demands a revised implementation strategy, commitment and resolve, and increased unity of effort," McChrystal said in the statement.

The general's review was passed on to Gen. David Petraeus, head of the U.S. Central Command, and to Gen. Egon Ramms, senior NATO commander. It will also be forwarded to Defense Secretary Robert Gates and NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

A Good Reason To Hate Cell Phones

  

   

Now comes the news that cell phone towers may be the cause of BEES disappearing more and more in populated areas.  Read this bit from Yahoo and make up your own mind.  For me, I hate being interrupted while doing something important, I don’t want to text people, and I’m offended by people talking to themselves in the supermarket or Costco or Walmart.  They look and sound like morons as they discuss the right type of cheese or mustard to purchase.  

  

OK, I admit I like the email part of my fancy phone.  And, it is very handy to check something on the web while away from home or office, though the screen is damned small.  I just prefer to talk on a real phone whenever possible, though I’d be a liar if I didn’t admit how great the phone is when expecting an important call or in an emergency.  If only they didn’t screw up the bees and perhaps even human brains.  Time will tell.

An Ex-conservative, Ex-protestant, and Senator Kennedy

As a kid I heard adults going on and on about “those Catholics” and how they were totally ingrained to support “The Pope in Rome” instead of our Constitution and the American way of life.  All this waspy chat came about because of John F. Kennedy, who they admired in so many ways, but being Catholic made him somehow less than perfect because in a real crucial moment, he would have to go with the Pope rather than Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, and the dreams and hopes of all our Founding Fathers.  They really believed this.  

  

Even Republicans who hated “those Commies” more than almost anything, yet were basic white Protestants who feared the reach of the Pope, would say things like “Better Commie than Catholic,” and shudder at the thought of either.  It was a different time and very scary when so many adults were so afraid of a religion that was obviously very big in the USA as well as Europe.  Many of them did not like or trust Richard M. Nixon, but voting for a Catholic was just not in the cards, even though JFK was so smart and likeable and handsome and saying the right things.

   

So was my introduction to the Kennedy clan.  Add in the supposed fact that “The old man was a rum runner during Prohibition,” and a little kid could have some real doubts about an Irish American family who appeared more and more to have morphed into a clan that seemed obsessed with serving the public, doing good for others, and using the old man’s wealth for admirable causes, not selling booze illegally.

 

Through the years it seemed like they were more and more the epitome of a loving American family who kept facing tragedy and going on, enduring and growing more determined, while also being Catholic.  Simultaneously the waspy world began to realize that Catholics were everywhere, from next door to across town and up the street, and even marrying into our own families.  Amazingly, we started seeing that the Pope was not ruling our lives, we were not becoming slaves to some “pomp and circumstance religion” and that life went on.  Folk masses even became a cultural event to not be missed by the sons and daughters of Baptists, Methodists,  Nazarenes and some Jews, and folk singer Tom Lehrer helped soften the blow with his Vatican Rag song.

 

Those Kennedys seemed more and more normal, and we talked about them with some sense of sadness because they had to suffer “the Kennedy Curse,” which was the urban myth that somehow God was evening the score or something.  You get wealth and power and then your family has to suffer to balance the universe, right?  Isn’t big religion warped?  It was then, in my opinion, and still is.  

   

So, Ted Kennedy had to deal with some bad events in his life and endure the curse, but he kept on keeping on and even in my more conservative days, I admired him.  Hey, I’ve always rooted for the ones who perservere and rise above the pain and negativity that life sometimes throws in a person’s path, so Teddy was my kind of liberal.  Add in that he was a jolly Irishman who was always trying to help “the lttle guy,” and it was true admiration that grew through the years as I matured to an adult.  Make that a “middle-aged” adult, please.

  

His passing, like so many, make guys like me face our own mortality.  All the money in the world, all the love of family and friends, cannot stop the reality of the physical world, that cancer kills.  Gee, that’s why it is called cancer, but it is still a hard pill to swallow.  We all die.  We all are at the mercy of “whatever.”  Some believe that it is God’s punishment, while others view it all as random acts of the Universe and the laws of physics.  Either way or some other belief system, it is a simple fact that we cannot, at least not thus far, beat the player in the game of life we call Death.  

   

I will miss Teddy Kennedy.  He was someone I didn’t always agree with, but I always admired and respected and was grateful that he was part of my world.  He did good.  I have always liked people who do good and so liking Teddy was easy.  I finally had to stop watching so much of the television coverage because I prefer to dwell on some positive things for awhile, to remember the good, to imagine the future, and to hope that others in the Senate and House will feel the same way and do something constructive and positive and loving.  Teddy would love that and I happen to believe that he is now in a better place, free of pain, and is hoping we back here on Earth actually do something good!  He did.  So should we.  He’s watching and for that I will  rest easier.

The Greatest Senator Of Our Time

     

 

He may have been the Senator from Massachusetts but he was also my Senator, even as I lived in different states over the decades.   For many (or most) of those years I was a Republican, a moderate/conservative, who found Teddy to be on the side of the little guy, the ones not “of privilege,” who often had no other voice.  When we didn’t agree, I still admired his abilities, his drive, and his Irish humanity.  I will miss him and so will America, but perhaps we will see some folks in D.C. get over themselves and do something for our Country, in part to honor Teddy. 

 

This XCon is hurting a little today, having lost a great Senator, but it makes me all the more driven to do as Teddy said of Bobby:

 

“…need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life; to be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it.

Those of us who loved him and who take him to his rest today, pray that what he was to us and what he wished for others will some day come to pass for all the world.

As he said many times, in many parts of this nation, to those he touched and who sought to touch him:

"Some men see things as they are and say why.

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) – Men who drink beer or liquor on a regular basis may face a heightened risk of several different types of cancer, according to a Canadian study.

Researchers from McGill University in Montreal surveyed nearly 3,600 Canadian men aged 35 to 70 and found those who averaged at least a drink per day had higher risks of a number of cancers than men who drank occasionally or not at all.

These included cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colon, lungs, pancreas, liver and prostate.

When the researchers looked at individual types of alcohol, though, only beer and "spirits" -- and not wine -- were linked to elevated cancer risks.

The world is just getting too complex for me.  They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store.  You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "paper or plastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop.

I bought some of those cloth re-usable bags to avoid looking confused but never remember to take them in with me.

Now I toss it back to them.  When they ask me, "paper or plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look.

(Newser Summary) – Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn has some gall. The fact that he can defend gun nuts calling for blood to "water the tree of liberty" after terrorist Timothy McVeigh wore the same Thomas Jefferson quote on his shirt in the Oklahoma City bombing infuriates New York Times columnist Frank Rich. When asked about pistol-packing protesters, "Coburn blamed not the nuts but the government," he writes.

"Coburn's implicit rationalization for far-right fanatics bearing arms at presidential events cannot stand," Rich fumes. The gun nuts and their supporters are part of a growing, ugly undertone of violence in current protests, writes Rich. But their "big guns" belie health-care opponents' true power, he adds. President Obama still "towers over his opponents" with the public and has the clout to pass meaningful reform, Rich notes.

Yes Virginia, there is a great lady righter.

There aren’t a lot of “hot” and wise conservatives in the media these days, at least not in my way of thinking.  Most all of them have sailed their boats to the island of Neocon thinking, fear of change, lying about most things, and an unholy belief in some sort of twisted, mean God who is nothing like the God I follow and love, who BLESSES AMERICA.  Most of these kooks are brainwashed and have so perverted what Barry Goldwater inspired me to believe.  (Rush Humbug, Dickhead Cheney, Scene Hannity, and so on – you know the type.)

 

 

There is one gal who many times hits the nail on the head, at least for moderate, thinking people.  (I like to think that XCon  is one of them.)  Peggy Noonan is a great writer and I look forward to reading her columns in the WSJ.  Here’s some bio information on her from their site:
